Pass it on....

I’ve recently spoken with people in our community about Proposition 8. Several I’ve encountered said they didn’t agree with gay marriage. Yet, they weren’t sure if they should impose their beliefs on others.
I’d like to point out that four California Supreme Court judges had no such pause as they overturned the voice of the people. We will find out on Nov. 4 if the majority’s view has changed on this issue, but before you mark your ballot, be sure you know just what you are imposing upon others.
In the state of California, same-sex couples are entitled to the same rights, privileges, and responsibilities as married couples under the Domestic Partnership Law. A “no” vote doesn’t give same-sex couples rights they don’t have now. All it does is change the meaning of a word, one that has, since the beginning of time, signified the committed relationship between a man and a woman.
It’s true that those of us who want the definition of marriage to remain what it has always been are imposing our beliefs, but when the majority speaks, the imposition is honored — or at least that’s how it used to work in this country. A “yes” vote on Proposition 8 doesn’t take anything away from anybody; it does however, reinstate the voice of the people.

"I’d like to point out that four California Supreme Court judges had no such pause as they overturned the voice of the people."

They didn't overturn that measure at all. They ruled that not allowing gay marriage is unconstitutional. By not being in the constitution what they stated is exactly true.

Basically the California Constitution is a higher level of law. They ruled that the previous measure did not live up to the higher law. And it doesn't.

And if gay people already have all the rights of marriage then why are you opposed? You're treating the word marriage like you've trademarked it. No organization or person owns the word "marriage". You need to review the idea "separate but equal" and remember its flaws.

If you insist that you do have a trademark on marriage then let's just give that word to religious marriages and require that after your religious marriage that you will also need a civil marriage. This is how it works in Europe. It will protect the word marriage and create equality.

Bigredhammer... I'm sure I'm not going to change your views on the subject, but I would like to comment on one thing you said: "This is how it works in Europe."

America was founded by people who left Europe in search of religious freedom. The laws in America, and specifically California, are different than those in Europe. It is not just allowing gay marriage that is the issue. There are already laws in California that if a student at a public school says marriage is between a man and a woman, he/she can be charged with harrassment. Yet my brother can be called a homophobe (for no reason other than his religious affiliation) and there is nothing he can do because if he says anything, he will be charged with harrassment.

If proposition 8 does not pass, we will be opening pandora's box, which is already starting to open.

All is not well in Europe.

Thank you for your great post! If you know to stop at a red light, you’d agree it’s unreasonable to say to your child would you like an apple or an apple when you’re holding up 1 apple and 1 banana!!

For a changing society, we need NEW TERMS to describe the types of relationships people have the free choice to form – not new laws that will put us all in speech & religious bondage.

Vote not with emotion but with reason; get the facts: www.ifprop8fails.org, www.protectmarriage.com, and www.preservingmarriage.org. Let's you , me, and our same-sex friends unite to vote Yes! on Prop. 8.

Just wanted to get your opinion on an idea that may or may not be a good approach. I have heard about people searching for proposition 8 in google and then clicking on the “yes on prop 8″ or “no on prop8″ paid ad links multiple times that appear at the top of the search results in google. Each time someone clicks on these links it is costing that campaign money. I guess clicking on the “no on prop 8″ ad is costing Hollywood stars like Ellen money they donated to the no on 8 campaign. I imagine if you were to break out the donations made to each campaign that the yes on 8 campaign’s donations have been made by at least twice as many people as the amount of people contributing to the “no on 8 campaign”. The majority of donations made to the “no on 8″ campaign have been made by Hollywood stars like Brad Pitt, Ellen Degeneres, and Steven Spielberg. Don’t forget the CTA, is it a bad idea for people who feel betrayed by the $1.2 million donation made by the CTA to fight back by clicking on the “no on prop 8″ paid search link multiple times each day? What do you think……

Your blog is great and I feel like asking no on 8's:
Hey! Got Research? Bashing, accusations, emotions are running high in this election about Prop. 8 but I'm not seeing people talk about the hard-core research. There is no hate in facts. They just are. And they are in support of yes on Prop. 8...

The country of France did their homework. They read the research and decided to put children's needs first because kids thrive more in a heterosexual marriage. Don't believe me? Read the research yourself:

abby,

Dr. Laura Haynes has a biased perspective and outright says that she bases her practice on scripture. Theocracy is no way to run a government. Care to give a non-bias reference? No? Here's one:

One of our most fervent supporters has agreed to match, dollar for dollar, whatever you and others can donate, up to a total of $1 million. That means that every dollar you give will buy two dollars in advertising time.

The best argument we have is the one that matters most. Our kids. Did you hear about the kids in Hayward California? Their school held a "Gay" day and didn't tell parents about it before hand. Kindergartners were taught about gay relationships as equal with marriage, and the parents had no opportunity to "opt out" like the opposition is telling us they will. It's happening already! Protect our kids. Vote YES on Proposition 8

Download Gay Day information flyer for parents of school age children and grandchildren here: http://beetlebabee.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/pacificjustice_layout.pdf

I printed these up and passed them around my neighborhood. Parents need to know!

beetlebabee has it right.

as i've studied this issue, i've realized that the state really does have a responsibility to protect its children.

France took a year studying the issue BEFORE they decided. They rejected same-sex marriage because of the rights of children.

Every child has a right to a mom and a dad. This is how they grow and learn best. While homosexual parents might be really good people, they can't equal a mom AND a dad.

society has an obligation to provide this basic and natural/biological right to its children.

there is a cool discussion going on here:

seperate has NEVER been equal. it is taking a group of citizens and relegating them to second class status since they can't "own" the same "word" you do.

Your arguments about the judges is the same argument people made when judges ruled for interracial marriage and ruled for integrating schools. They were overturning the will of the people then to.

Thats what makes America great. The minority has a way to be protected from the opression of the majority.

I'm sorry if that bothers you. It used to bother me to until I finally accepted the fact that i am a minority and nothing can change it.
